I started my research in 1975 when my uncle Frank's wife advised me that my father had been married before coming to the USA and that he left his wife and 5 children in England. This would have been in 1909 when he left England, went to Port Hope, Ontario, Canada. He stayed with his sister Annie and in 1912, came to California.
My grandparents. John Thomas Rowland, Sr. (born in 1843, in Poughill, Cornwall) and Mary Jane McClarie (Jane) who was from Kilikhampton, Cornwall, was living on Argyle street in West Ham (Canning Town), Essex at time of 1891 census. They were living in Cardiff, Wales in 1874, when my father, John Thomas, Jr. (Jack) was born. The other children, William and Annie were born in Islington, London and Francis (Frank) was born in Canning Town.
The family resided in Poughill, Cornwall, for several generations. My family line stayed in England intil the 1880s, when great uncle Richard and wife Jane came to San Francisco. Other brother Francis and possibly Samuel followed in 1890s.
