| Pat Gillis, was born Francis Gillis February 8, 1889 in Broadcove, Inverness, Nova Scotia. He was the youngest son of Donald Gillis who was married to Mary Ann Gillis. There were eight children: John Ronald, James, Hugh, Annie, John Joseph, and Francis. Francis (Pat) worked in the coal mines of inverness with his brothers. When he was sixteen he went to live with his sister Annie in Boston where he worked on the streetcars. He later moved to Montana where he was a cowboy. He opened a restaurant there with a friend. He joined the U.S. Army during World War I and was in the Air Corps.When he got out of the army he came to California and becamea policeman on the L.A. Police force. He met his wife Mary Gillis while walking a beat. Her brother was a pharmacists with the same last name. Francis and Mary had four children: Norman Francis Gillis, Donald Lindy Gillis, Melven Paul Gillis, and Virginia Marie Gillis. Virginia is the one searching out the family tree and ancestors.
