The obituary of Julius Neefe says that he was born in Saxony, On February 8, 1838 and that he learned to walk on the sailing vessel which brought the family to America. Charles,Christina and sons Julius and Charles A Neefe went directly to St. Louis where Charles, the father, worked as a cabinet maker for seven years. St. Louis is probably the birth place of Hanna M. born about August 18, 1844 in Missouri.
The family then came up the Mississippi in a boat to Galena and from Galena to Ash Creek in Richland County by a hired conveyance drawn by oxen. There were no houses in Richland County at that time except those along the Wisconsin River and horses were scarce. The family went back to Galena for two years because the father was ill. This was probably around1848-1849 because Elizabeth was born in Illinois..
The 1850 Federal Census for Richland County , enumerated on August 27, 1850 by John Combe (District 26, Reel No.: 432-1004; page no.: 204A gives Charles Neefe, age 45 , occupation farmer, birthplace Germany; Christina Neefe, age 42, birthplace Germany; Charles Neefe Jr., age 18, occupation: farmer, birthplace : Germany; Julius Neefe, age: 13, attending school; Hannah M. Neefe, age: 6, birthplace: MO, attending school; Elizabeth Neefe, age: 2, birthplace IL; Frederick Neefe, age: 47, birthplace: Germany.This Frederick is probably the brother of Charles Sr.
The 1860 census shows Charles Neefe,52, and wife Christina in Richmond Township, Richland Center. The two children in the household were Julius Neefe 16 and Elizabeth Neefe 12. Helena Neefe,78, was also in the household. Charles Neefe 26 and wife Nancy 24, were listed just ahead of Charles and Christina.
By 1870, Charles and Christina and the younger children had moved to Cottage Grove (Vilas) where Charles Sr. kept a store. The 1870 census lists the parents ages as 61 and lists Eliza,21, born in Illinois and Emma, 20, born in Wisconsin. Charles's occupation is listed as merchant. The 1871 plat lists the following business in section 9: C.F. Neefe, dealer in Hats, Caps, Boots, Shoes, Crockery, Hardware, Drugs, Patent Medicine, etc.
The 1880 Census shows Charles and Christiana living in Cottage Grove (Vilas) with Christiana suffering from dropsy and Charles occupation listed as a merchant. Charles Sr. served as postmaster for Cottage Grove from 1870 til 1882 when the postmastership was held by Benjamin Smiles for two years and then by Clara Aldrich, followed by Sarah Swan until the Vilas Post Office was discontinued in 1902.
