My Aunt, Jeanette Kathleen Buttell laid the foundations for my interest in this, the maternal line of my family, by providing me with a list of all thirty-seven of her neices, nephews, great neices and great nephews in what she referred to as "A little Bit Of The History" she wrote, and I quote:-
"The house, our home, at 24, Argyll Road, Grays Thurrock, Essex England, was first tenanted in 1898 by my parents, William and Hannah Buttell. Their children were Sarah Lydia, Beatrice Alice, Phyllis Rosetta, Albert William, Herbert Leonard, Hilda Hannah, and myself, the youngest Jeanette Kathleen.
The two last named children were born at '24' as also were grand-daughter Sylvia Beryl, born in 1918, to Albert William and Lucy and grand-son Herbert William born in 1921, to Herbert Leonard and Rose.
Over the years thousands of feet have been up the path and into our home including folk from Australia, Canada, South Africa, Belgium, France, Holland, and Malaya. One visitor book would not have been large enough to record all their names.
Jeanette Kathleen Buttell 1981."
Since my retirement in 1996 I have been endevouring, with the help of her neices, nephews and great neices and nephews to record in more detail, the history of Aunt Nett's ancestors and decendants.
The family were, prior to 1881, from South Ockendon where both my Great Grand-father William 1833-1895 and Grand-father William Jnr. 1860-1925 are recorded to have been born.
Quite recently as a result of access to the 1841,1851 and 1861 UK Census returns I have discovered my 2 x Gt. Grandfather John Buttle and his brother Joseph.
Living with Joseph in 1851 is his father James born in March Quarter 1782 at Stifford. This links the South Ockendon Buttle/Buttell families to that recorded in the International Genealogy Index of LDS (IGI) I believe that James is my 3 x Gt. Grand-father. From the IGI I now know that his father and mother Nathaniel and Elizabeth Buttle are my 4 x Great Grand-parents but, where did they marry? and where did they come from? These now are the burning question.
In the 1881 UK Census both my Gt.Grand-father and Grand-father were resident at 2, Rose Bank Cottages, Grays, Essex. My Grand-father was at that time just turned twenty-one and later that same year married Hannah Carter of Little Thurrock.
Since embarking on this project I have been contacted via the Internet with others at home and abroad from Australia, and New Zealand who have told us more about the BUTTELL family and the CARTER family.
If you think our ancestral paths could have crossed please contact me and tell me of your interest.
Our BUTTELL Family marriages have joined us to others, which include the BAKER, BRAISTEAD, CARTER, CREWDSON, GOSNALL, LODDEN, OVERY, and SMITH families and many more.
In the past eighteen months I have come into contact with decendents of my Great Uncle Joseph which has provided more detail I am still processing and authenticating. Amoung this is the copy of a will of Nathaniel Buttle of Stifford who is a farmer. This names all the children recorded in the IGI as baptised at Stifford.
