Notes for John Swittenberg: John Swittenberg arrived in South Carolina in 1752 on The Caledonia. It is thought that his wife, Christiana, was Christiana Jeserel, who also arrived on The Caledonia as a single person in 1752. Swittenberg's name was spelled in various ways in his early years in this country: Swittenberg, Swittenburg, Swetenberg, Schechenburgh, Schweehtenburg. It was spelled John Schechenburgh on the March 15, 1754, record of his grant of 150 acres at Bear Creek. Later deeds for the same land spelled his name John Swetenberg and John Sweetenberg.
