Notes for Daniel Emmet Moore: D. Emmet came from a family of politicians. In 1866, his grandfather, Joseph William MOORE, was elected the first Recorder of Deeds of Rapides Parish, (Alexandria) LA. This was equivalent to the first Clerk of Court, and Joseph held the office for two years. Dr. Robert E. MOORE #213 (D. Emmet's son) recalls seeing recordings in the Rapides Parish Courthouse, written in beautiful long-hand apparently by Joseph's wife Eliza CAVANAUGH MOORE, who was a school teacher.
In 1877, at the creation of Vernon Parish (Leesville), Joseph William MOORE was elected the first Assessor and Tax Collector of the Parish.
In 1912, D. Emmet's father, Patrick Emmet MOORE, was elected the first Clerk of Court of Allen Parish (Oberlin), LA. Patrick's younger brother, Dennis MOORE, was elected the second Clerk of Court of Allen Parish, serving from 1920 to the time of his death in July 1936.
D. Emmet's Education and Military Service
D. Emmet attended public schools in Allen Parish before entering Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge. He enlisted in the United States Army on 27 June 1918 at Oberlin, Louisiana. Before being discharged from service on 27 December 1918, Emmet achieved the rank of corporal, and served as "Acting Sergeant." He did not serve overseas.
D. Emmet MOORE's Career
In 1919, D. Emmet started his life-long career of public service. For about three years, D. Emmet MOORE was employed as the Deputy Clerk of Court of Allen Parish (Oberlin), Louisiana serving under his father, Patrick Emmet MOORE, and his uncle, Dennis MOORE.
Then in 1922, before their son Robert's first birthday, the family moved to Ruston, Louisiana, where D. Emmet served as the Deputy Clerk of Court for Lincoln Parish for one year.
In late 1922, D. Emmet, Grace and their son Robert, moved to DeRidder in Beauregard Parish, Louisiana, where D. Emmet served as the Deputy Clerk of Court for ten years. Then in 1932, D. Emmet was elected Clerk of Court of Beauregard Parish and was re-elected for 28 consecutive years before his retirement in 1960.
D. Emmet was a man who loved people. He had a great sense of humor and loved to play practical jokes.
Additional information on D. Emmet MOORE's family can be found in the History of Beauregard Parish Louisiana.
Where They Lived
The MOORE family first lived at 126 Royal Street in DeRidder. Then in February 1932, D. Emmet, Grace and their three children moved to a house at 205 W. Fourth Street. The house was only a few blocks from the Beauregard Parish Courthouse where D. Emmet worked. He walked to work and often came home for lunch. After the death of D. Emmet in 1966, Grace lived alone in the house until 1931 when she moved into a nursing home because of her health. Today, Grace Lea MOORE FRAZAR, their daughter, lives in the house.
He is buried in Beauregard Parish Cemetery in DeRidder, Louisiana.
Louisiana Legislature Praises Daniel Emmet MOORE
Even though the headline is incorrect and the copy is had, I felt that the following resolution was important enough to include. I am not sure who crossed out the incorrect name and wrote in Daniel Emmet's name. Also, I don't know in which paper the article visa published.
