I started doing research on my family history when my aunt passed down the family information she had been holding on to.
Then my mother added research done on our familiy that dates back to the 11th century. Then I started finding more family tree books to add in. Until now I can't even take credit for any of the research done! I'm just compiling everything I find in the family that was already done by other family members, usually years old. Once that is done I will go on to my own, more detailed research.
In addition to compiling all the information in the books, I have talked to (and still do) to as many family members as I can, when I can, as much as I can, and am constantly finding new sources.
I am also researching my husband's family history, which will be included in everything I do.
My goals in doing all of this research are: to make the knowledge available to our families, to compile an ultimate written family history in the form of a long, long story and possibly fictional story based on some of the familiy, just to let imagination run wild on how things could have happened and what our ancestors could have been like.
I also want to build a physical representation of the entire family tree - one you will be able to walk up to, under and around to see everybody. And, if possible, I want to start tracing illnesses inherited down the various branches of our tree.
I've set my goals very high, so it will take a long time to accomplish them, but I think that, in the end, everybody will be thrilled to be able to experience every part of their family throughout time and throughout the world.
