The intent of this page is to seek information about my Danish great grandfather, Capt. Hansen (we don't know his first name), his origins and descendants. I've used my paternal grandfather's name (Capt. Hansen's son) for the title of this family home page.
The German authorities expelled Capt. Hansen from Schleswig-Holstein sometime after the German-Danish War of 1864 and he settled in Melbourne, Australia, around 1880. Capt. Hansen owned a farmstead in Schleswig-Holstein and a small fleet of cargo ships. Capt. Hansen retained two iron-hulled square-rigged cargo ships, on which he resettled his family, and employed in Trans-Pacific trade between Australia, the Pacific Islands and the United States West Coast.
Capt. Hansen had four children; two born in Schleswig-Holstein and two in Australia. An eldest son (we don't know his name) remained in Australia, was also a ship captain and national Australian sculling champion. In 1904, Capt. Hansen's wife (we don't know her name) emigrated to Richmond, California, with her three youngest children (who all married in Richmond and in birth order): Chris "Chrissie" Hansen (married Edwards "Ed" Woods); Eleanor "Ella" Hansen (married Elmer Vaughn) and George Hansen (married Lella Oma "Omi" Lightfoot).
My paternal grandfather, George Hansen, settled in Honolulu with his wife and son in 1917. I am using my grandfather's name in my home page title because we have very little information about his father, Capt. Hansen. And, I'm hoping to contact the descendants of my grandfather's siblings, add their information to this site, and find out if they have any information about Capt. Hansen, his wife, family and their roots in Denmark.
