During The War Between The States.
James Was Picked Up By The Confederates And Taken To McMinville, Tennessee.
He Escaped And Went To Kentucky And Worked As A Spy For The Union.
He Was Caught At Butler's Landing In Clay Co, Tennessee By Morgan's Raiders And Shot As A Spy On
February 23,1865. His Wife Brought His Body Back To Putnam Co To Be Buried. His Son James Was Six Years Old At The Time Of His Death. He Remembered That During His Father's Funeral, He Went Up To The Coffin And Put His Finger On The Bullet-Hole In Is Fathers Head.
