He was a trustee of the first school built, called the Wilkinson
County Academy. Richard was a member of the Old Friendship Primitive
Baptist Church. Their doctrine was narrow, opposing foreign missions
and Sunday schools. He was tried for being unorthodox, being in favor
of a Missionary Baptist Church which was later established. He was
forgiven and remained a member of the Primitive Baptist Church until
his death.
