Martinez Hedesa and Martinez Saenz

About Our Family Research

A great deal of my research comes from my uncle Raul Miguel Martinez Ferrer, and from Claudio Freixas, husband of Margarita Martinez Martinez, a cousin of my mother's. Also, some comes from my own memories of the family, and stories told me by my mother and from uncle Willy (Guillermo Martinez Ferrer), uncle Ray (Dr. Raul M. Martinez-Ferrer), uncle Richard (Dr. Ricardo Martinez Ferrer), and my favorite aunt Mercy (Mercy Martinez Ferrer, married name Perez and married to a good man, a good husband and a good father, Carlos Perez from Havana, Cuba. Carlos is a man who learned to love Caibarien. The largest little town in the universe). I am leaving these memories for my children, their children, and my cousins Susan, Mercy, and Melinda (who came to Cuba in 1959), Carolina and Jennifer Martinez, Isabel Martinez Isidro, Willito Martinez Isidro, and
Dalita Martinez Arazosa, daughter of my uncle Luis Eladio. Also for Carlos and Mercy's children, my cousins, Carlucho Perez Martinez and Macuqui Perez Martinez (married name needed here).

Please note: Eladio Martinez Hedesa married twice. First time to Maria Josefa Perez who bore him Julia Luisa Martinez Perez, and Luis Eladio Martinez Perez.

Maria Josefa Perez died in 1916 (approximately), and Eladio Martinez remarried Mercedes Maria Ferrer Ibarguen, who bore him
Guillermo, Raul Miguel, Ricardo, and Mercedes Maria Martinez Ferrer.

Don Luis Martinez y Canavas also married twice. From his first marriage to Isabel Hedesa y Coto he had three sons, Eladio, Raul, Publio , Carlos, and one daughter, Aurora. From his second marriage (to Josefa Saenz de Abascal), he had three children: Joaquin, Luis and Estrella. (Note from Raul Jimenez Martinez: I only got to meet Raul, Carlos, and Aurora). I did not meet my greatgrandfather Don Luis Martinez y Canava because he died of cancer in 1937, two years before I was born. I also did not meet Eladio Martinez Hedesa, my grandfather, because he died of heart failure in January 1939, eight months before I was born.

I am Raul Jimenez Martinez, only son of Julia Luisa Martinez Perez and Raul Jimenez Cortina, MD. I married Carmen Rosa Prieto Vina in 1961 and we have three children, Carmen Rosa (Choochi) born on December 2, 1962 in Bryan, Texas. Raul Guillermo born on January 26, 1964 in Cali, Colombia, and Gabriel Douglas, born on December 3, 1965 in Houston, Texas. All three are married to Edward, Janelle, and Theresa respectively. Choochi has two children, Jasen and Sharee, born in 1980 and 1985 respectively.
Raul and Janelle do not have children so far (I am writing on June 17, 2000). Gabriel and Theresa have one son, Jacob Gabriel, born in 1995.

I am presently writing the romance, adventure, political, semi-autobiographical novel called "The Music Of The Straits" under the Pen Name, Rick Hammerhead. It's the story of a young Cuban who emigrates to the United States at age 17, just after Fidel Castro landed in Cuba's Oriente Province in November of 1956.
The novel follows the young man, his parents, relatives, and struggles in the United States. The novel also picks up the political and compassionate fight to keep Elian Gonzalez in the United States, and the struggle to liberate Cuba from the tyranny of Fidel Castro's opression. Several mythological characters are found in the novel: Walker (El Mecanico) Hammerhead, a great shark who could talk and fly, and of course The Lady Of The Sunrise, brought to Villa Barien to lead the hero, Gabriel Medina, on a merry go round chase around the world.
