About Our Family Research

According to my grandfather, Colonal Nathaniel Heidelberg, he arrived in this country in the early 1900's as he and his four brothers jumped from a freighter that had come to New York after leaving Germany. He told me that my name was not derived from slave owners but was Heidelberg when he jumped ship in New York. He added that there were five of them (brothers) that jumped ship but they scattered and he heard shots being fired. The result was that two of his brothers were never heard from again. He said that one brother went to Mississippi another went to Massachusetts and he stayed a while in New York. He said that his mother was German but his father was Ethiopian but never explained how the name Heidelberg came into play. Later he went to Newport News, Va. where he married my grandmother, Laura Garrison, daughter of Johnny and Hattie Garrison. My father, Colonal Mckennil Heidelberg was born in September, 1923. My father had two sisters, Bernice Heidelberg, born in New Jersey and Dorothy Heidelberg born in Norfolk, Virginia. I was born in November, 1943 the third son of Colanal and Lena King Heidelberg.
