Like many Hellums, tracing the family has been difficult because of pronunciations and spelling changes, not to mention families living together and cousins and generations reusing first names. Throw in the "inciting incident of 1756" and things get even worse, with intentional changes. :) It took me awhile, but I finally pieced the puzzle together, be it Hellums, Hallums, Hallams, Hallems, Hallam, Hollem, Allum, Allen, etc. Earle's research was a great starting point, and several people provided some good clues. But living the research non-stop for a week did the trick! Thomas and William were the original colonial pioneers, and they settled in several MD counties. They and theirs gradually migrated to several locations, for several reasons (including 1756), including: 1. PA (West Bethlehem Township) 2. VA (possibly) 3. NC (Rowan County) 4. OH 5. SC (Several counties along the Saluda River) 6. TN, KY, GA, AL, AR, TX, OK and points westward
