The Helms family of Panola Co. are traced back to South Carolina in the early 1800's. James A. Helms, (b.1850,Ga.-d.1906,Ms.), was the son of Allen Hellams/ Hellums(b.1814,S.C.-d. 187?,Ms.).Allen Hellams is traced from Pontotoc Co., Ms.(1870) to Cass Co., Ga.(1850), and then to his birth place of South Carolina, 1814. Allen's brother was Andrew Hellams and I have placed him in Pickens Co., S.C.. Andrew Hellams was possibly named for Genl. Andrew Pickens. Genl. Pickens and John Hellams were comissioned to buy land for the town of Pickensville in 1791. John is listed as cav., spy in the Continental Army, born in 1750, England. John had 5 sons, of these, my research has led me to believe that William is the father of Andrew and Allen. I am still looking for information that could either prove or disprove my theory.
