John Baptiste Herbelin was born in the Alsace region of France. He entered the United States at Galveston, Texas in 1869. He came with two of his brothers, Eugene and Alfred all at the same time. They left eight sisters and 2 brothers in France. The parents names have been said to be Jean Baptiste Herbelin born about 1811 and Marie Anna Courand born about 1817. This I do not know to be correct or incorrect along with some of the names of the siblings thought to be left behind, Francis, Cecile, Josephine, Ernest. At the present we don't know where in the Alsace they lived.
John Baptiste became a US citizen on 5 Nov. 1888 in Waco, McLennan County TX where he raised his family.
Mary Jane Smith Herbelin is believed to have been born September 08, 1853 in either MS or Bastrop County TX. Her father was Dempsey C. Smith( Demcy C. Smith) born December 26, 1834 in MS( his parents John E. Smith and Mary unk) and mother was Evan Margarette Patrick (Evan M. Patric) born May 03, 1835 in MS(her parents John Patric and Mary unk). Again I don't have proof of these statements. The names and information on the Smith family came from a family bible owned by Nettie Herbelin daughter of Mary Jane Smith. The children of Evan Margarette (Patrick) Dempsey C. Smith and are : Mary Jane Smith married to John Baptiste Herbelin, John C. Smith b. November 08, 1854, William Pinckney Smith b. October 09, 1856, Georgianna Smith b. May 19, 1858, George Washington Smith b. May 19, 1858 married to Texanna Bailey (had a daughter Nina Mae), Henrietta Septer Smith b. February 03, 1861, Valeria Jeanette Smith b. December 29, 1864, James Harvey Smith b. December 02, 1869, Brandon Winfield Smith b. December 02, 1869
Some of this information was compiled by Lucy Mae Smith and Wilna Sawyer, it was given to me my father-in-law. Other names related to the Herbelin families are: Willis, McMahan, Davis, Hall, Trammell, Lassetter, Smith, Sawyer, Fischer, Kelly, Drennon and many more. Many remained in Texas and there are many descendants still living in Texas today.
Another brother was supposed to have come to the US after the first three brothers. This brother did not come to Texas and we don't know where he settled and raised his family. I love to connect with any of the Herbelin family members and any connected by marriage. I also would like to have corrections on any misinformation here because nothing here is guaranteed to be 100% correct.
