I'm looking for my roots. . .Hertel or Hartel, Jacob and Mary. He would be my great-great grandfather and she my great-great grandmother. I think they lived in Van Wert County, Ohio in 1880 and had 8 children --Catherine, Ellen, Nelson, Clinton, Ema, Corey (sp?), and Louie Rufus (sp?). If this is the right family, Nelson is my great grandfather and was a 9 year old boy at home at this time. Living in Van Wert County, Ohio at this time was also the Phillip and Agatha Hartel family with 8 children, and the Adam and Catherine Hartel family with 8 children. After 1880 these families no longer show up in Ohio. There seems to be the thought that my great grandfather (Nelson) came back to the area from Wisconsin as a young man. He worked on the Jacob and Susan Crable farm in Allen County, Indiana and then married Emma Crable -- Jacob and Susan Crable's youngest daughter. By this time he seems to have changed his name from Hartel to Hertel. Also, sometimes he appears to have gone by William N. Hertel instead of Nelson William Hertel.
