Albert and Louise Herzig came to the US after their son, John Herzig came to Texas from the Lutheran seminary in Bern, Switzerland. John was ordained a minister in the Texas Valley where he served for many years. It was here that he met his wife, Selma Bauer from Arneckeville, Texas. She developed a chronic illness which caused the family to move to drier climes of California. There Selma eventually died. Rev. John remarried, this time to Selma's sister, Amalie Bauer. Pastor John returned to his ministry in Texas and continued serving the South Texas area for many years, before returning again to California where he lived out his retirement years. His eldest son, John Carl Albert Herzig, left the farm in California to enlist in the US Army and was sent to Ft. Sam Houston, Texas. With the musical background provided him by his father and family, John became a member of the US Army band and performed for the opening of the National Cemetery in San Antonio. John met Theresa Schneider in San Antonio, married her in 1926, and raised five sons (John, Charles, Kenneth, Ronald and Edward). Theresa's father was in the printing business, and John eventually went to work there. Many years later he becme foreman and co-owner when the original owner, Charles J. Schneider retired. John retired himself in 1973 and died in April of 1988. One of his sons, Charles, was ordained a Catholic priest in 1955, and in 1987, was named by Pope John Paul to become the founding Bishop of the newly created diocese of Tyler, Texas. Bishop Charles died in September of 1991 and is buried in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Tyler, Texas. His sibling, Johnny died in Dec 1987, and his younger brother , Edward, died in October, 1995. Kenneth and his family of seven children remained in San Antonio where most of the family resides with their individual families. Ronald lives in Houston with his family.
