Notes for Piers Legh: He was his grandfather's heir. He was a soldier and was present at the siege of Berwick, where he was made a knight banneret by Edward IV. He was described in the 1580 Visitation of Cheshire as "Piers Legh who after was a Priest." He entered holy orders after the death of his wife. "It is stated in an early MS, but on anonymous authority, that sir Peirs Legh being an ecclesiastic, was sentenced, as a penance for the share he had in this murder [of John, or more likely, Thomas, Boteler, Knt., of Bewsey] to build Disley church; which he performed in the year 1527." Also, "At Winwick, Lancashire, Sir Peter Legh, 1527, who, on the death of his wife, relinquished his knightly calling for the priestly office, is represented [in monumental inscription] wearing a chasuble over his armour."
