Notes for Sarah Perry: Shortly after moving to Ashe, J.W. Shepherd apparently fathered a child by a lady named Sarah Perry, daughter of Ebanezer & Barbary Perry. The child was named Franklin. He was born June 20, 1851. Franklin lived with his maternal grandparents and went under the surname of Perry. Meanwhile, his mother married Alford Pike on April 9, 1853, and the marriage record lists "Jas. W. Shepherd" and his brother-in-law, Nathan Weaver, as witnesses. When Franklin reached adulthood, he began using the Shepherd surname, and went by Franklin Shepherd until his death on January 1, 1936. Franklin's death certificate lists his father as "Wilborn Shepherd", born in "Wilkes County, NC."
