In 1885, Mr and Mrs G.L. McNary and family of five children, Bert, Nellie, Olive and Ernest, camt to Plum Grove TWp. from Sheldon, MO. They bought 320 Acres of land east of Potwin, where they lived in a barn for over a year. Later they hauled lumber out of Missouri by horse and wagon to build a home. In 1888, a daughter, Ruby, was born. Later on the McNary place four grandchildren were born. Le Roy and Letha Varner, Olive Fresh, and Elvis Steele. In June 1915, after the McNarys owned it for 29 years, the place was sold to William Weber, who later sold it to the Lawrence Slaymaker family. In 1963, they tore down the house and built a new one. While building the first house, little Effie let her doll fall down between the studs. When the Slaymakers were tearing down the old, Effies daughter, Olive Tucker, asked that they watch for the beloved doll her mother had mourned for many years. They found it. In 1915, Annie Williams came to Potwin to Teach at Potwin High School, where she was principal. In July, 1917, she married W.H. (Bert) McNary. Bert was assistant at the Potwin State Bank for 29 years. Bert and Annie had four children. Wilda Crawford, Lovington, NM, Bob, who in 1978 bought the McNary place after it had been out of the family for 63 years and lives there at this time, George, Bob, twin died in infancy, and Bill, of Lawrence.
