Ancestral File Number: 1DV0-5D David Hess Complied by Diana Lee Hayes Wilcox David Hess born Feb. 18, 1837 in Ray County, Missouri, son of Jacob Hessand Elizabeth Foutz. He had to assume at the tender age of ten years the responsibilities of a husband and father in his mother's family. The older brother, John W., had joined the Mormon Batallion, and David was left by the death of his father to assist his mother in providing for the three other children. They lived in a little cottage made of bark elm until 1848, when the oldest brother,John W., returned to take them to Salt Lake City. David had put in a small crop of buckwheat and corn for the support of the family, and had supported them most adequately.He was the next to oldest child still at home when his father died in 1847. David, his mother, his brothers and sisters started across the plains, April 1, 1849, and as a bare foot boy he herded a small flock of sheep toSalt Lake arriving July 28, 1849. The family settled in Farmington where he has since maintained a residence although in 1871 he went to Georgetown, Idaho, with Ezra T. Clark to colonize that place and lived there 16 years engaging in the farming and cattle business. He was called to the Southern States missionin 1882. He was chaplain of the Utah State legislation in the sixth and seventh sessions. He fought in the Black Hawk War. He married Jane Ann Wilson 28 Mar 1858 in Farmington, Davis Utah. She is the daughter of Whitford Gill and Mary Sheehand Wilson. They had 9 children. He married Elizabeth F. Fretwell Hess, 27 Apr 1870, they had 2 children: Alma born 15 Aug 1871in Georgetown, Bear Lake, Idaho. And Charles E. born after 1871 in Georgetown, Bear Lake, Idaho. He married Luella M. Hyde daughter of Orson Hyde and Elizabeth Galli. They had a son, Adrian Hyde Hess. He died June 18, 1928 in Farmington, Davis, Utah. He is buried in the Farmington City Cemetery.
