JASON NICHOLAS BARKDULL by Mary Burkdull Jason Nicholas Barkdull was the son of Michael Barkdull and Prudence Trumayne. Michael and Prudence joined the LDS Church some timebetween January 1 and April 21, 1834. They attended the dedication of the Kirtland Temple in 1836, and while attending this dedication they received patriarchal blessings under the hands of the Prophet's father, the first Patriarch of the church. This family went with the body of the church to Missouri, where theyresided until 1839. On their way to Nauvoo, Michael, husband and father of this family died on the 25th day of July 1839, in Quincy, Illinois. Prudence, the mother, with her four sons and one daughter, went on to Nauvoo. While in Nauvoo, Prudence joined the Relief Society. The Relief Society voted to donate $2.00 to the widow Barkdull. Here they lived until the Saints were forced by mob violence to again leave their homes and seek refuge in the western mountains. Prudence with her family, Jason Nicholas, the youngest, spent the next seven years somewhere between Nauvoo and Salt Lake City, arriving in Utah on the 29th day ofJuly 1852. By this time the other three boys Isaiah, Soloman, and Peter, and one sister, Sarah Elizabeth, were all married and out on their own. Jason Nicholas and his mother settled in Farmington, Utah. Prudence passed away on the 13th of March 1859. Jason Nicholas, the son who helped settled Georgetown, was born January 17, 1834, in New Portage, Ohio. Nicholas found a young lady, Emma Elizabeth Hess, who became his wife January 4, 1857. This marriage was solemnized in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City. To this union were born seven children: Nicholas T., Emma Elizabeth, Ellen L., Florence A., John Michael, David Lot, and Riley Alma. Clark and Henry A. Lewis, who was the presiding elder at the time, came to what was then called Twin Creeks and settled in answer to the call from Brigham Young to settle this town. About two years later, the town name of Twin Creek was changed to Georgetown in honor of George Q Cannon when he came visiting with Brigham Young. Jason Nicholas built the first house in Twin Creek, now Georgetown, in 1871. After it was built he sold it to Milton Earl, who wasa relative of Nicholas' wife, Emma Hess. Nicholas then built another house about one-half block south on one of the creeks which ran down through the town. When this house was completed he went back to Farmington and brought his familyback with him., The winter of 1871 and 1872 was a severe one. They kept trails dug from house to house to keep contact with each other. The few families living there through that winter with their limited resources endured many trials and hardships. They also had their happy times. Their first Christmas celebration held in this little town was in the home of Jason Nicholas and Emma Elizabeth. They had a pot luck dinner. After that, they had games and music and readings. Mary Ann Lewis, Bishop Lewis' wife, and Emma Hess Barkdull. Nicholas' wife gave readings. They gave home-made mittens for gifts and had rock candy and raisins for the children. Nicholas was a very musical and happy type of person. He played the violin very well. He played for dances on this violin for the people to dance to at their socials. In fact he went to all the towns around in the valley and even to Soda Springs and close towns.
