Vertie Bell Champion was born in Indian Territory near what is now known as Ardmore. She came to Asher with her parents, and then moved to St. Louis, Oklahoma in 1906. She married Harvey Henson Hines in 1912. She and Harvey had four sons. She had two sisters, Oma Dethrow, and Edna Ryan, both of whom lived in Shawnee. Vertie was a very independent person and did not want to be called Mrs. Harvey Hines, She was Vertie Hines. With a $1,000 gift from her father, Harvey started the Hines Motor Company in Shawnee. She died September 23, 1973 of a stroke from untreated hypertension.
