John Carraway Hines is the earliest known relative in our family tree. The story of John C. Hines death was handed down by his widow Sarah to her children and grandchildren as follows: John was a bear hunter by occupation, and on his last bear hunt, he shot a bear while on the other side of the river. Having to drag the bear behind him in the swift current, he collapsed and died of exhaustion after reaching the near river bank. It is not known which river was the scene of this tragedy. He was 32 years old when he died leaving his 30 year old wife and four children James C. (age 12), Mary E. (age 9), John H. (age 5), and William (age 3).
