I am tracing the descendents of James Mainard, Manard, Maynard progenitor of Maynard families of the Tug River and Big Sandy River Vally encompassing the states of Viginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio.
Thus far, no primary sources regarding the names of James' birth parents and their place of birth have been discovered. However, several sources appear to confirm that he was born in Virginia about 1750 and later moved to Wilkes County, North Carolina where he lived at the time of the American Revolutionary War. The census report of 1850 cites North Carolina as the birthplace of both James and his wife Chaney Smith Maynard.
According to summaries of his military records, James enlisted as a private and served six months with the North Carolina Troops under the command of Captain Jesse Franklin and Benjamin Cleveland. According to this same source he subsequently left Wilkes County and moved to Floyd County Kentucky and from there to Pike County, Kentucky where he was living at the time that his pension was granted on September 1, 1832. October 13, 1852 is cited as the date of his death. James was approved for a pension for his military service. However, neither his heirs nor his widow, Chaney Smith Maynard, identified as "Spouse One" received a pension following his death.
