The Hoilmans & Hilemans of Western North Carolina

Updated April 5, 2001

About Our Family Research

My name is Brian Hoilman. I live in Spruce Pine, Mitchell County, North Carolina. My 4-X Great-Grandfather was David Hileman/Heilman, born September 30, 1791. Unfortunately, I have failed to note some of my sources but if I wasn't 99% sure they were reliable, I wouldn't print the information. It has been somewhat difficult tracing my family tree, of course I know it isn't easy for anyone to do, and in my opnion, if it was already prepared for you, that would take away all the fun.BUT, one of the reasons this has been hard for me, is because of the redivision of the counties : Mitchell County was formed in 1861 from Yancey, Watauga, Caldwell, Burke, and McDowell Counties. The parent counties were formed as follows: Burke County was formed in 1777 from Rowan County. Yancey County was formed in 1833 from Burke and Buncombe. Caldwell County was formed in 1841 from Burke and Wilkes. McDowell County was formed in 1842 from Rutherford and Burke. Watauga County was formed in 1849 from Ashe, Wilkes, Caldwell and Yancey. In 1911, part of Mitchell County went toward the formation of Avery County. Anyway, I hope this information can help someone else & maybe vice-versa.
