Notes for Martha John Holland: While my grandfather was employed by the Railroad (they were living near Pleasant Grove, Va.), a bear began coming to the house seeking food. Grandmother rode the train into Suffolk, purchased a 12 GA., dbl. barrell rabbit-eared shotgun and a box of double-Ought shot, from Kurtzwile (sp.) Hardware on E. Washington St., returned home, and several nights later killed the bear which was raiding their smokehouse.
