Notes for John Holland: 1704 Nansemond County Quit Rent Rolls, pg. 45, John shown with 700 acres.
Hinshaw makes no mention of the marriage of John's daughter Mary to Joshua Craven. Still, we know beyond doubt that the marriage took place either at the Chuckatuck Monthy Meeting site or at Fighting Cock Plantation.
A number of previously published materials have attributed John to Gabriel Holland of Jamestown Island fame. However, no documents have been found or published showing that Gabriel had any children whatsoever. jgh 15 Jan 2004
An ancient cem. is located on Fighting Cock Plantation and within the confines of said cem there is a wrought iron fenced section containing approx. 9 graves which date no later than the mid nineteenth century.
In 1981 the old home was rented and some construction was undertaken in the basement/cellar area. A Brown Bress Musket dating from the Revolutionary War era) with a full charge of black powder and ball was found.
During the early to mid Nineteenth century a substantial wharf was constructed to accomadate the packet steamers which plied the waterways taking out cotton and other plantation grown crops and bringing in supplies. The remains od that wharf stands today.
During the prohibition years whiskey arriving from Canada and other "overseas" points of origin were transfered off Cape Henry to smaller vessells capable of threading their way up the Chuckatuck creek and Nansemond River to be unloaded at Fighting Cock Plantation. The family realized substantial income from such activity.
