Notes for Crystal Irene Clevenger: Crystal was my favorite grandmother. I was not her favorite, but that didn't matter, She was special. Every Saturday, my mother would pick her up and the 3 of us would go Downtown Anderson to shop. We always stopped at Woolworths and got a soda before we took her home. This was back when there was no such thing as" THE MALL". There were bad feelings between Crystal and her mother. They didn't feud, they just didn't like each other and it was obvious. When I got involved in Genealogy, I discovered that Crystal was born a year before her parents married, I thought maybe that was part of their problems. Mattie Estelle Campbell, her mother, also lost 2 daughters in infancy, and her pride and joy, Harold, when he was a young man of 23, leaving only Raymond and Crystal. Mattie did not like her husband either, and did not mind telling you so. Crystal did go to Marion college to study music, I have her piano that she bought in 1940. She had this horrible little Pekingese, Puggy, that terrorized everyone but her. She had this wonderful cookie drawer in her kitchen, where she kept shortbread cookies, the kind with the ruffled edges and icing in the center. My mother was aghast that Crystal smoked,, but none of us ever saw her. There was a time that she went by the name Joan, and sometimes Teressa, I have no idea why, unless it was to torment her mother. And oh my the beautiful roses that she grew in her yard. The flower garden framed her backyard and she worked in it daily in her later years. I was 16 when Crystal died, my first experience with death, it was quite devastating. I really liked her,, that may sound odd, but it is expected to love your grandparents, and I just really liked her too. My grandparents had a 4 room lake cottage, my brother and I slept on a big ole bed that was seemingly 3 feet tall. I fell in that lake when I was 3, my father saved me from drowning
