Notes for Zelda Adela Heavilin Boyer: Zelda was known to my family as Matte's eldest sister. Now comes the question who her parents actually were. In the 1880 census , Jay Co., IN, Penn Twp. Zelda is listed as granddaughter to Jacob and Elizabeth with the last name Heavilin and is 6 years old. According to Matte's bible Zelda was born Nov 21, 1876. Emily Jane and Cassius did not marry until 1880. So yet another mystery or perhaps an error with the age, because in the 1900 census Zelda is living in KS with her Uncle Henry and Aunt Susan as a boarder in the residence of Aunt Susan's parents. She is 24 years old with the last name of Boyer , but is single.
March, 2007 Zelda was again found in Kansas in the 1905 Census. She is still living with her uncle Henry Heavilin. She is Single and is still listed as Zelda Boyer. It occurred to me that Boyer is not the name of a husband, but perhaps the surname of her father. Perhaps explaining why she left Indiana after finding the name of her birth father.
Zelda Boyer, once again found in the 1920 Census, Grant Co., In. She is listed as bookkeeper and as Head of Household. She is still Single, which is not the information that I had. Annette and Daisy Campbell are living with Zelda and lists as sisters to Zelda. In the 1930 Census Zelda is married to Charles Chalmer Thomas. There are several discrepancies to this census, perhaps to cover up her heritage. 1. In 1930, Zelda's age is considerably incorrect, putting DOB as 1882, instead of 1874. 2. Lists age at first marriage as 20, suggesting she married Charles in 1894. Family records have Zelda marrying Charles in 1902, but according to Census records, Zelda is still single in 1920. In 1895 she is located in Montpelier, In as Zelda Heavilin, working in the family Carpenter Business. 3. Lists a Mildred Thomas , DOB 1906 as daughter. This is the Mildred Treem listed in the 1910 Census, living with Chalmar and then wife Elma and listed as lodger. I have yet been able to find any marriage records for Zelda or Charles. I am uncertain why all of these facts were covered up and misconstrued, but I 'm still looking.
