Because of disastrous flooding in 1795 and 1798, John moved his family from North Carolina to Ohio in 1801. He was the first member of the West Branch Friends to move from the South. He resided approximately 1.5 miles southeast of the Meeting House near West Milton.

This begins the lineage of President Herbert Hoover.
