Notes for David Hoover: This David was known as David of Whitewater. He wrote a letter to his grandneice that is a breif resume of his life. This exerpt is taken directly from Hulda's book:
"I was born on the unwharrie...My education was very limited and had it not been for my inclination and preseverance, I should in all probability at this day be numbered amongst those who can scarcely write their names....I had no access to books of any kind...and never had an opportunity of reading a newspaper....My father, ...in order to better our circumstances, came to the conclusion of moving to a new country. He was worth upwards of $2000, which....was considered over an average in point of wealth. On the 19th day of September 1802 we loaded our wagon aand wended our way to what was then called the Northwest territory, now the state of Ohio...But a small portion of land was settled at that time...We were hard to please....thus time passed until the spring of 1806 when myself and four others traced a section line more than thirty miles through unbroken forests to where I am writing...About three weeks after this my father accompanied me to this land of promise...my father was looked upon as a leader and had a tendency of drawing others, which caused a great rush to Whitwater....Having now selected a spot for a home...I therefore married a girl by the name of Catherine Yount on the last day of March 1807... In 1807 the Indians took three scalps out of this county, stole a number of horses, and here candor compels me to say...we Christioans were the aggressors....In 1816 we... named the state Indiana and...I was elected Clerk of the Wayne Circuit Court...and held the office nearly fourteen years. I....laid off the City of Richmond which was first named Smithville...which name did not give general satisfaction....and I made choice of Richmond....I have seven commisions before me for offices I have held besides serving six years in the Senate of this state. In politics I belong to the Jeffersonian school. My motto is taken from his first inaugural address 'Equal and exact justice for all men without calling in question their politics, religion, country, or color'....The world is my country and my religion is to do right."
