The villages of Great and Little Bromley in Essex are small. In 1848 there were only 738 inhabitants of Great Bromley and in 1991 the population had grown to 1,078.
Nevertheless, descendants of Robert Bowle and Mary Carter, who were born there in the early 18th century have been traced to other parts of England (mainly Essex, London and Lancashire), South Australia, Canada and Malta. Currently, only one couple of the name Bowell is shown on the electoral register for Gt Bromley.
