I began researching my family origins in 1998. The present spelling of the name Hoppe was changed from Hopp in the early part of the 20th century by my father and his sister Maida. The reason for the change has remained unclear, because the query was never made to my father before he passed in 1994 at the age of 96. I can trace my tree back to John Hopp, my great, great, grandfather. His name and place, and date of death is all the information I have on him. On my great grandmothers side of the family I go back to my seventh great grandfather, Martin Kuhn, born around 1625, in Germany. The tree includes places such as Rockingham, VA; Greene County, Ohio; Clinton County, Indiana; Newton County, Indiana; Frankfort, Indiana; Escanaba, Michigan; Powers, Michigan, just to name a few. My desire is to discover family on my mother's side. The name is Korpi. They came from Finland, and settled in Upper Michigan, my mother being born in Ishpeming, Michigan. The family did live in Rumley, Michigan. But until more information is available for Michigan and its counties, I will be at a standstill, unless there are others who can help.
