James A.Horton,was born Nov 18, 1821, died May 19,1889,and buried at Zion Hope Church on US 341 north of Helena, Ga. On his toombstone is "An Honest man is the noblest work of God". His great-grandson, Arthur Horton,who died in 1888, gave a verbal account, as he had been told: James A. had at least 3 sons;Jim who settled in the Tifton area, John who married Mary Kearce, daug. of John Kearce and who raised a family in Telfair Co, and Jack who married Molly Green and who also raised his family in Telfair. James A. may have had a brother, Lum, from Tifton. Jack Horton and John Horton's descendants have a reunion at Little Ocmulgee State Park, near McRae, GA, the first Sunday in October each year. Raford Horton, and Arnold Horton are local great-grand sons of Jack.
