"Social Securiety/Disability Reform
Created by Kendall Hornback on February 6th, 2004 at 8:13 pm AST

Public Note To The President,

My Name is Kendall Hornback, I’m but , one of about 50 million in this nation
with a physical disability .

Purpose :

I write to ask that your administration please , somehow find the needed time to
see that new guidelines be brought before the senate as well as congress , a nation-
wide amendment to existing social socurity/disability programs .

The area of Concern :

To provide automatic marital division of assets in marriages of disabled citizens,
thus to protect their financial stability and indivisual ability to maintain needed in-
surence benefits , regardless of his or her partner’s own income .

Clearification Point :

In the event that one within the marriage is able to work outside the home daily,
It still doesn’t mean that couple is not financially in need .

The person within the marriage with said disability or disabilities is still in need of
his or her own income and healthcare services .

Conclusion :

I’m a disabled citizen of this country whom has experienced as a direct result
of this problem as described great personal hardship.
I please ask that you not just look at this and throw it aside but, be serious in the
review of such matters as this because they tend to affect the lives of so many .

Name Comments
33 John I think it is wrong that 2 disabled people who are married cannot get their full benefits for example: $600 + $600 =$1200 per month, but get only $600 + approximately 40-50% of second amount, while 2 children in the same household can get $550 + $550- the full amount if the parents' income is within limits...
This ($800) is not a livable amount in this day & age!
32 Diana Most Disabled persons who are married had made contributions to socity and to their families. I spent my life making sure I would be self reliant and indepentant. Become disable should not make me dependant on my spouse. Our incomes should be separate.

23 Angela I agree that there needs to be some major changes, but the person who started this petition obviously doesn't have a clear understanding of Social Security benefits ... I think he is referring to SSI, which is (in layman's terms) basically a welfare program for disabled people who cannot get Social Security benefits.

Also, I used to work as a claims rep for SSA and I can tell you that many have that attitude expressed by Andrea. I can sympathize to a point because you would not believe how many people try to abuse the system and waste resources and money by applying for basically no reason, over and over. But that'e neither here nor there, I suppose, and I am not trying to justify her comments.
22 J.J. Andres's comments need to be forwarded to the SSA and I think I will be the one t
