Edward Hornibrook came to Canada from Bandon in the County of Cork, Ireland in aproximately 1830 with his wife Elizabeth (Burchell) and 3 of their 4 children. Elizabeth died on the way to Canada and was buried at sea. William, Elizabeth and Philip and their father Edward settled on a 300 acre farm in New Bandon new Bathurst, New Brunswick. Two years later, his son John, age 14 years, sailed to join his father. He had been attending a private school kept by an Episcopal minister, Horace Townsend Newman. The boy landed at Saint John, N.B. and with an older companion traveled on foot to New Bandon, carrying their all in packs which they gradually lightened by throwing away clothing and books. He kept two books (this note was written in one of them) one of which was given to him as a prize. He lived all his life, 71 years, on the family farm raising 11 children and besides farming he taught school for many years, was assessor and held other offices of trust - was known as "Honest John Hornibrook".
