I am just beginning to research mine and my husband's family histories. My maiden name is Meek and my family has been in MS at least 100 years. Other surnames on my father's side of the family are Priddy and Webb.My father is Edwin Ernest Meek. I know almost nothing beyond my paternal grandparents. My grandfather,Jon Franklin Meek, was born around 1903 and grew up in Jackson, MS and I have been told that our ancestors operated a ferry at "Meek's Crossing" or "Meek's Ferry". My paternal grandmother was Ernestine Quinn Priddy and also grew up in Jackson, MS. However she had grandparents in Tallahatchie Co.,MS which is where my grandparents settled and raised my father and his 2 brothers. My paternal grandmother's parents were Ernest Priddy and Velma Webb Priddy Slay. My paternal grandfather's parents Were John and Josephine Meek (they divorced and my paternal grandfather had another family after he remarried in Greenwood,MS) On my mother's side the surnames are Wolfe and Young also of Tallahatchie Co.,MS. My mother is Helen Rebecca Wolfe Meek. Her mother was Alice Elizabeth Young Wolfe and her father Jesse Halbert Wolfe. My maternal grandparents were Jesse Leon Young and Mae Young.
The surnames on my husband's side of the family are Brockman,of Hopkinsville,KY; Houston of north MS (Lafayette Co.);Kirby, of Houlka,MS, Walker, and Hale, I suppose all of north MS. My husband's parents are Billy Harold Houston and Mary Adeline Mason Houston. Maternal grandparents; Brockman Mason and Mary Adeline Kirby Mason. Paternal Grandparents; Willie Walker Houston and Beuhla Ethel Hale. We have been told that his family is related to Gen. Sam Houston (the Alamo) but it's never been substantiated.
