This is the Howeth family linage, from my great, great, great, grandfather, Thomas Howeth, and his wife, Nancy Ann James. (I should mention at the outset that there are some people who spell my name 'Howet', 'Howett', 'Howit', 'Howitt', 'Howith'. These are all wrong.) Thomas was born in June of 1797, in Tennessee, moved to Texas in 1839 with his then family of 15 children. The youngest was born in Texas. Thomas, with Nancy, sired 16 children, the 4th being my great, great, grandfather, Harvey. Photos are another thing, you'll just have to look. It must be stated at this time that, at least the 6 or 7 of oldest of the brothers took part in the Civil War, and are noted in several of the history books about the State of Texas.
The Howeth family lore has it that, there were 7 brothers who came to America in the mid to late 1700's, (the 1770's sounds about right) one being a child of about 5 years of age. Some claim they came from Germany, others claim they came from the British Isles. In truth, I don't know. As far as I've gotten, is that Thomas' parents were named William and Mary, but from where? Possibly the North East Coast. Thomas also had brothers John, James, Andrew, sisters Katherine, Elizabeth, Martha, but in what order is unknown at this time, except that Thomas was the oldest.
In Gainesville, Texas, there still exists a family business that was started by the oldest son of Thomas and Nancy, the W. W. Howeth Land and Title Co. on the corner of Howeth and California sts. and operated by a grandson, Donald Howeth.
Further information can be obtained, if I have it, by contacting me directly by e-mail. Of course, having spent many hours and many miles, since I started working on this in 1982, I would naturally require some information from you in return.
