Currently searching for information on the fathers and mothers of James Brooks and Mary Mathison (Matheson, Mathieson, Mathewson) who emigrated to Canada from England and Scotland sometime between 1850-1860. The father of Mary was Peter Mathison/ Matheson/Mathieson and mother was Sarah, both from Scotland. With the help of a Canadian researcher, James Ritchie, I have found my great great grandparents who were from Bradworthy, Devon, England. Their names were James (I ). I must add Roman Numerals now to keep our James straight. James I wife was Miriam Walter. James Brooks (II), b. 1850-1851, in Goderich, Huron, Ontario, Canada, and Mary Mathison, Matheson, Mathieson et al, who was born on the Isle of Skye in Scotland bet. July 4, 1852-1854. Do not have any information as to what area on Skye she was from.
Their trek together began in Goderich, Huron Co, Ontario, Canada, where James II and Mary married, to the births of their first four children, named: James (III), Peter, Jenny and John Henry --to their long journey to settle in the Elm River township of the Red River Valley of what was then called the Dakota's. In the land of the Mandan's, Metis, Blackfeet and Sioux, my ancestors began a new life, "settling" one of the newest states in America and raising some of the finest wheat and grain crops in the world. Mary and James would have a total of eleven children. Those born in Elm River Township, Traill County, Dakota were named : Elizabeth, George, Emma, Mary Grace, Sara Merium, Isabel and Bertha. This is just the beginning of their family story.
Dedicated to my beloved parents, James (IV)Edward and Ingeborg Anna Helene (Vestvik)Brooks and Grandparents-James and Jessie Pearl (Darby) Brooks, and Olaf and Augusta (Hopen) (Vestvik) Finsvick. Special thanks to cousins Harriet (Rockstad) Merkins, who sent me volumns of information on the Isabel Brooks/Hans Rockstad family, and from Richard ( Dick) Jalbert on the Emma Brooks/Wm McKinnon, Lucille McKinnon/Jalbert families, also to Cousin Blanche Templer for information on the Elizabeth Brooks/ Marcus Wike families and to Goldie (Johnson) Brooks who sent me information on the families of Peter Brooks/ Carrie (Karen) Rockstad. This dedication is to each of you who cared so much and helped me bring our family together by the written word, names, dates, stories, and photographs. From the bottom of my heart, thank you all so very, very much.
