I have been stumped for several years researching my father's side of the family. My mother was easy. She was Norwegian, and I am well into her Norwegian ancestry. From my father's side I know what follows;
LYLE JOHN HOWARD, b St. Anne Twp, IL 1934 DELMAR LEE HOWARD, b. Paxton, IL 1904, d. Clinton IL, 1966 m. Jennie Alvina Fremstad CHARLES LEE HOWARD, b Columbus, OH. 1869, d. Kankakee, IL 1940 m. Cora Belle Murray, daughter of William Patton and Nancy Flannery Murray. b. 1873, d. 1944 JOHN HOWARD - And there it ends.
I have never been able to actually confirm that CHARLES was born in or near Columbus, OH. CORA BELLE was born in W. VA. and at some point migrated to KY after 1880. I suspect she met and married CHARLES in Elliot County, KY. They moved to IL sometime around the turn of the century where my father was born.
CORA BELLE had two illigitimate children prior to CHARLES coming on the scene. One, CECIL MURRAY was born in 1893, KY. WILLIAM ESTILL MURRAY, b. 1898, KY. WILLIAM died in 1953 and is buried at Newfoundland, KY. No other info on CECIL.
The death certificate for CHARLES states that his father, my g grandfather was JOHN HOWARD, mother unknown.
The 1910 census states that JOHN came from England and that his unknown wife came from Wales. The 1920 census states that JOHN was born in VA. and unknown wife was born in Wales.
This is it after several years of searching. See upcoming family tree for more info on grandmother, CORA BELLE'S side of family.
One interesting tidbit is that my father always told we children to keep the name LEE going in the family because there is alegedly a connection to ROBERT E. LEE. We have done that.
