William Randolph Ray stayed on his father's (John Wesley Ray) farm in
Gwinnett County until early manhood. He had a good education, having
attended George Harrison Hopkins' school at Goshen, and he taught school
before and after he married Nancy Hopkins. He wore a mustache. He was
nicknamed "Dock." He had a genial disposition and was liked by everyone.
He moved to Atlanta by 1889 and went into the tobacco business with a man
named Stevens. Later, he opened a business of his own at 250 Marietta
Street in Atlanta called the Ray Fish Company. He sold fish, oysters and
game in season.
He became very fat in his forties and was about five feet ten inches
tall. He had a large stomach and weighed about 250 pounds. This was too
much for him, and he died suddenly with 'fatty degeneration of the heart'
in March 1910 at the age of 48.
