Family Notes:
Federal Census records from 1830 show that an Israel A. Howe, a “FREE WHITE MALE” “Of twenty and under thirty” was living in Bennington, New York at that time. On Feb 1, 1836, Israel Howe purchased land in Parma not far from Lucretia’s property. A quote from a yet unknown reference: “the Howes had a farm outside of Devereaux, Michigan”. Land records are still being examined for more definitive information about Israel. There are no other known references documenting the Israel Howe family in Parma. The town of Devereaux is just beyond the township boundary line from Springport and was therefore documented in their history instead of Parma's. There are, however, several references to the Howe name in Parma area history – Among others, there’s a Charles E., an Albert and an Edith. There is a headstone with Truman Howe’s name in the Bolles family plot at the Wright Cemetery in Parma (this person could be Joshua or simply a pre-purchased marker that was never used. In the same grave marked by Truman’s headstone, there is also a Mathias Grace.
Israel is shown to be at age 49 when the 1850 Census was taken on August 20th. Shown also is Lucretia, at age 49; Angeline, age 13; Joshua, age 11; and Truman, age 9. In the 1860 Census, Israel and Angeline are not listed in the Howe household, however, Lucretia and the two sons are still in Parma just before the outbreak of the Civil War.
An interesting description appears on the Wright Cemetery website at URL Findagrave.com. It states: "Truman House MOTHER's Grave - No dates or name of mother. One lot had three markers but no last names on them. Two were Father Mother and the other Ellen." The names in this entry were a combination of two transcriptions by Frank Passic, a historical writer for the Albion Recorder. Frank copied down the readable information on some of the head stones and also collected some information from the 1932 (or thereabouts) DAR transcription record.
The entry may really be Truman Howe's Mother's Grave. In addition to the father grave (which could be Israel), the third name listed was "Ellen". This might be a nickname, a contraction or perhaps a misinterpretation from the name “Angeline”.
Some Remaining Questions 1. What is Israel’s middle name? 2. When and where was Israel born? 3. Who were his parents and family? 4. When did he marry Lucretia? 5. When did Israel die and where
