My Grandfather immigrated to America in the late 1800's, His name was Burkhalter, but when he served in the Spanish/American War, his name was mispelled as Burkholder, so when he applied for citizenship they had to use his military records. He was married in Alabama, where my father was born (Amos Chris Burkholder). His wife was a second or third cousin to Jefferson Davis.
