Alexander Hughes was born in June 1852 (malato) slave in Halifax,Va.and lived there all of his life.Married Bettie Ballou abt: 1885 and they had 8 children Maggie,John,Martha, James, Alexander,William,Mary and Elizabeth (AKA Lucy)

In the 1870 census Alexander Hughes (listed as a farm hand) Was found to be living in the household of Spencer Cosby ,Martha was listed as Malato female house keeper. Alex was 17 years old and the oldest Cosby child was Moses Cosby 14 years old and he was listed as black

In the 1900 census Martha (malato) was living in ALEXANDER'S HOUSE . THE CENSUS LISTED HER AS ALEXANDERS GRAND MOTHER AND SHE ONLY 60YRS OLD AND ALEXANDER WAS 47YRS (ALEX'S NAME WAS SPELLED ELLICK ON THE 1910 CENSUS)

I AM TOTALLY CONFUSED ABOUT SOME OF THIS INFORMATION
