I am the great granddaughter of Jasper and Melissa Elizabeth nee Pitcock Sailes (also spelled as Sails, Sales, and Sale). For many years, I have wanted to search out my parents' ancestors to learn more about my roots. I began first with my father's side.
To date, I have only been able to trace my father's side back to Louisville, Lexington County, KY. His grandfather, Jasper Sails was born there November 30, 1860 to Benjamin F. Sails of TN and Sarah Taylor of Kentucky. It seems that Benjamin's son, Jasper and Nathaniel migrated to Wright County, MO appx 1880. Jasper married in 1882 to Melissa Elizabeth Pit(t)cock/Pedcock.
When I was a little girl, I used to sit at my great-uncle's feet and listen to stories of his growing up. He was Elbert Eugene Sailes and he lived in Beaumont, TX. Uncle Elbert once told my brother and me that the Sailes named was spelled differently at one time. The spelling changed when one of our early family members was "hung as a horse thief!" I still don't know if my name -Sailes was changed from Sails or Sales because my long, lost relative did the deed or not.
In seeking my roots, I have learned more about my father's mother's side than his dad's. She was a Sallings/Salling/Saling. Her decendents were Ridgways, Goodwins, Kennedys/Kenadas and Killebrews. She was the daughter of James Sallings and Mary Eliza Ridgway, the daughter of William A. Ridgway and Angeline Killebrew Kennedy of TN. So far, tho, I haven't been able to get documentation of her line.
I will continue to seek information as I travel along this road.
