We,the descendents of Amy Julia Kathryn House and Harold Washington Holt, are an African-American family that has celebrated the gift of life given by God with the birth of each child. Each family gathering has given us the opportunity to mark both ordinary and special occasions. Recently, as we have gathered to share good food and fond memories, we note the startling change in our "known" numbers and the age that our two matriarchs have achieved. This past April 19, 2003, Anna Kathryn Holt Comer achieved 85 years of age. On June 30, 2003, June House Holt Davis will be 80.
During the weekend of June 27, 28 and 29 2003, we will celebrate here in Pittsburgh, we will celebrate their lives and our family history.
Anna and June are the two living siblings of the 9 children born of the marriage of Amy House and Harold Holt. The family has grown over the years and many of us are living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where Amy and Harold spent 50+ years of their married life.
We often have gatherings we have called "family reunions," and they are wonderful fun and they nurture our spirits. But the fact is, we have not known how to invite many of our relatives to attend these functions. We are looking for family members from Irontown, Ohio as well as McDonald, Elizabeth, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania--and elsewhere--who may be related to Amy and Harold Holt.
Some names you may recognize that are included in our tree are: Frederick Douglas (or David) House (Amy's father) and Mary Jane Holmes (Amy's mother). We have learned that Frederick House's parents--William House and Susan (unknown)--were from Virginia. Mary Jane Holmes' family was from Pennsylvania, as far as we can tell. Harold Holt's father and mother, Harry Holt and Katy Kibby Holt, were from Ironton, Ohio. Both of their parents were from Kentucky. We know that Harry's parents were Clayburn and Adaline Holt. Katy's parents were Charity Ward and George Kibby.
We want to learn more about the Holts and Kibbys in Kentucky. We need to learn more about The Houses of Pennsylvania and Virginia and the Holmes of Pennsylvania.
This year, we are building a view of our family tree. We are learning more about our extended and ancestral family and its history. We hope to create a family reunion celebration that will spur the new generation on its journey.
