My name is Mary Patricia Rogers Hughes, and I became interested in my geneology in about l975. My dad, James P. Rogers, did all the work by hand. No computers, in those days.
We interviewed all the relatives that were still living, at that time, and got a lot of information.
After my dad died, I simply put all the information in a box where it remained until about 2000, when I got my first computer.
I was really interested in the Dabney line, because, my grandfather, Thomas G. Dabney had married my grandmother Margaret Ryan, against her parents wishes. A year later she became pregnant with my mother. He left, when she was 8 mos and was never heard from again, until 1948, when my grandmother received notice that he had died in California with a new wife.
I was young, but I couldn't understand how a man could leave his wife and never see his child.
That's how I got started, and what a revelation it was to me to find that he was from such a prominent family.
