We can trace the Gramp name back to about 1703 in Germany. Most of my male ancestors were weavers. The farthest back we go is Christian Michael Grampe, born near Nurnberg, Bavaria, Germany. His son Albrecht Grampe, was born in Lauf, Bavaria, Germany. His son Johann Freidrich Grampe died in Marienberg, Germany. We know Johann Freidrich Grampe had 10 children, but we only know the name of one of them, Johann Emil Grampe born in Hartensdorf, Germany Sep 10, 1822. I believe through this man we are related to Gramps in Australia (the wine-making Gramps). The letter "e" on the end of the name was apparently dropped by my great-grandfather, Paul Gerhard Gramp born Aug 9, 1858 in Hartensdorf, Germany died Feb 3, 1890 in Meerane, Saxony, Germany. The first Gramp to emigrate to the US was his older son Otto Paul, who later went back for his younger brother, Paul Gerhard, my Grandfather. Their sister, Marie Helene Gramp remained in Germany and married Bruno Pfeiffer. My father has been contacted by a lawyer about the house in Meerane, none of Marie Helene's descendants want it.
