My grandparents immigrated to the United States from Terijoki, Finland in 1903 and 1904. First, my grandfather, Pekka Vilho Soininen, who was originally from Kuopio, came over alone in 1903, and then my grandmother, Helmi Pirkola Soininen, from Terijoki, came over with Kertu (Gertrude) in 1904. There was apparently a subsequent trip for Helmi and Kertu, because they came back through Ellis Island in 1911, with my aunt, Irja (Elva), who was then only 11 months old. In 1912 Leo and Pekka Sven came to the United States with Greta (Margreta), Helmi's sister from Terijoki. Helmi has one other sister, Ida Heino Tikkannen.
Helmi's parents were Matti Pirkola and Margreta Heino Pirkola - all from the Terijoki area. Any additional information regarding this branch of the Soininen, Pirkola (Pirkola), or Heino families would be very appreciated. Pat Soininen Zell pat.zell@gmail.com
